POSITION SUMMARY:  

The Substations Superintendent is responsible for planning, managing, and executing all substation construction activities on project sites. This role ensures that work is completed safely, to high-quality standards, on schedule, on budget, and in alignment with contract requirements. The Substation Superintendent will work closely with and collaborate with the Project Manager, provide leadership to the substation teams and subcontractors, coordinate closely with engineering and other disciplines, and serve as the primary onsite representative for all substation scope execution.

 

DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Supervise civil construction execution and ensure project delivery aligns with safety, quality, schedule, contractual and financial targets. 
  • Support the development of Installation Work Packages & Inspection Test Plans. 
  • Participate in the development of civil subcontracts and defining scopes of work. 
  • Direct and oversee the development of the civil subcontractor’s scope of work, sequencing, coordination, scheduling, installation, and logistics.
  • Monitor civil subcontractor performance including productivity tracking and/or earned value. 
  • Provide technical support as required.  
  • Participate in preconstruction planning, including constructability reviews, schedule development, and material planning.  
  • Assisting the pre-construction team in the budgeting and scheduling process and in closing all major tendered project opportunities to ensure constructability is taken into account, and no scope gaps exist.  
  • Understand and oversee compliance with EPC contract requirements.  
  • Act as the main on-site representative for civil, maintaining effective coordination and relationships with clients, business partners, subcontractors, project teams and all other stakeholders.
  • Support the project team to complete weekly schedule updates are provided and incorporated in the project schedule, ensuring that completion dates and milestones are met.   
  • Ensure daily reporting, progress updates, and schedule input are provided to the project team. 
  • Resolve construction conflicts, technical issues, delays, and in-field issues, promptly.
  • Promote and enforce Barton Malow’s Safety and Quality culture across all substation work activities.  
  • Ensure all civil installation practices follow contract requirements, regulatory requirements, utility standards, and industry best practices. 
  • Oversee civil construction work on projects.
  • Support development of civil Installation Work Packages and Inspection & Test Plans.  
  • Coordinate civil activities with electrical, mechanical, and structural teams to ensure smooth workflow and adherence to project sequencing.  
  • Work with utilities, AHJs, and permitting authorities to support permit issuance, inspections, and approvals. 
  • Manage day-to-day onsite civil operations from Notice to Proceed through commissioning and turnover.  
  • Lead daily PlanofDay discussions for civil work and contribute to overall site coordination meetings.  
  • Support project closeout including punch lists, testing documentation, and turnover packages. 
  • Ensure various environmental conditions are met as per SWMP, ECA and DFO Approval, Design parameters especially erosion Control Plan, etc.
  • Work with Civil Sub, Site Superintendent, Environmental personnels to remediate any environmental non-conformances.
  • Assist in controlling costs by minimizing waste and optimizing resource utilization.

 

REQUIREMENTS & QUALIFICATIONS:

  • 10 years of civil construction experience.
  • 5 years’ experience in a supervisory or superintendent role.
  • Experience in energy, renewables, industrial, or utility electrical construction.
  • Strong understanding of electrical codes, drawings, standards, and installation practices.
  • Previous EPC project experience is an asset.
  • Willing and able to work on remote project sites for the duration of construction.
  • Demonstrated ability to lead crews and subcontractors effectively.
  • Strong commitment to safe work practices and safety leadership.
  • Proficient with Microsoft Office and digital field tools.
  • Must be able to work on project site, and open to relocation for future projects.

  • Base salary is $130,000 - $150,000, dependent on candidate job-related knowledge, skills, and experience.
