POSITION SUMMARY:

The Project Safety Professional supports and promotes a positive safety culture across project sites. This role coordinates and carries out safety responsibilities outlined in project safety plans, the Barton Malow Canada Health and Safety Manual, and applicable OHS standards. Responsibilities include leading safety meetings, supporting new team member onboarding and site orientations, addressing and documenting safety concerns, and leading incident investigations when required.

PRINCIPAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:

• Promote and follow Barton Malow Canada’s Health and Safety Program.
• Build and maintain a safety-focused culture by coaching and mentoring employees at all levels.
• Maintain a visible and approachable Barton Malow safety presence by walking all active work areas.
• Lead or facilitate site safety meetings, stretch and flex sessions, morning toolbox talks, visitor orientations, and new-hire orientations.
• Ensure new team member safety records are collected, uploaded, and tracked daily.
• Organize and maintain all site documentation in accordance with BMCL’s online folder structure.
• Attend site POD meetings, contractor safety meetings, and BMCL monthly safety meetings.
• Prepare and submit required daily, weekly, and monthly project reports for the customer.
• Complete daily and weekly safety observations.
• Conduct safety inspections and audits at the frequency needed to support company goals.
• Update site safety boards to ensure information is accurate, compliant, and clearly communicated.
• Correct or address safety hazards, unsafe acts, violations, and site safety concerns.
• Address site safety concerns effectively and verify that appropriate controls are in place.
• Escalate serious safety matters or company-wide safety implications to the Safety Manager or higher in a timely manner.
• Implement project safety plans, Barton Malow Canada safety manual policies and procedures, and applicable OHS standards.
• Participate in project leadership meetings to present and share project safety information.
• Evaluate training compliance, coordinate training for site personnel, and, in collaboration with the Safety Manager, conduct formal safety training as needed.
• Lead third-party safety inspections by project teams, insurance providers, MLITSD, and other applicable authorities, and report findings to the Safety Manager or higher.
• Lead or support incident investigations for all incident types and prepare related documentation and summaries.
• Attend pre-construction coordination meetings to support project safety planning and requirements.
• Create and maintain required site documentation, including the site-specific safety plan, environmental plan, and traffic plan, in collaboration with the Safety Manager.
• Inspect fire extinguishers, first aid kits, and AEDs monthly.
• Coordinate with the Safety Manager on any new, unusual, or authority-sensitive matters.
• Perform additional duties as assigned by the direct Manager and Project Manager.

REQUIREMENTS & QUALIFICATIONS:

• Minimum 4 years of full-time construction safety experience required, or 6+ years of safety-related experience in another industry.
• Safety certifications from accredited educational institutions are preferred.
• Recognized safety designation preferred.
• Current Basic Adult First Aid and CPR certification is an asset.
• Advanced knowledge of construction safety principles, practices, standards, and methods, with basic knowledge of environmental regulations required. Basic knowledge of union relations is required in unionized work environments.
• Intermediate knowledge of applicable regulations, codes, standards, and best practices.
• Strong time management, organizational skills, and attention to detail for short- and long-term priorities.
• Ability to multitask, prioritize work, meet deadlines, perform under pressure, and lead or coordinate small teams or basic initiatives.
• Ability to communicate effectively with coworkers, supervisors, project team members, subcontractors, and owners.
• Strong communication and problem-solving skills.
• Strong interpersonal skills with the ability to work independently and collaboratively in a busy environment.
• Excellent time management skills and the ability to work effectively under pressure.
• Sound independent judgment, reasoning, and decision-making skills.

• Strong working knowledge of Microsoft Office applications, including Excel, Word, and Project.

WORK CONDITIONS:

• Site-based work.
• Required safety equipment includes steel-toed boots, safety glasses or goggles, and other PPE as needed.
• Overtime may be required.
• Work may be performed indoors and outdoors.
• Exposure to active construction site conditions is required.
