POSITION SUMMARY:
The Substations Superintendent is responsible for planning, managing, and executing all substation construction activities on project sites. This role ensures that work is completed safely, to high-quality standards, on schedule, on budget, and in alignment with contract requirements. The Substation Superintendent will work closely with and collaborate with the Project Manager, provide leadership to the substation teams and subcontractors, coordinate closely with engineering and other disciplines, and serve as the primary onsite representative for all substation scope execution.
DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Develop and implement strategies to grow and enhance Barton Malow Canada’s substation capabilities.
- Lead daily construction execution and ensure project delivery aligns with safety, quality, schedule, contractual and financial targets.
- Support the development of Installation Work Packages & Inspection Test Plans.
- Participate in the development of construction contracts and defining scopes of work.
- Direct and oversee development of subcontractor’s scope of work, sequencing, coordination, scheduling, installation, and logistics related to projects.
- Monitor self-perform and subcontractor performance including productivity tracking and/or earned value.
- Provide technical guidance to electrical forepersons, journeypersons, and subcontractors.
- Manage substation subcontractors’ performance, ensuring scope alignment, quality, and timely execution.
- Participate in preconstruction planning, including constructability reviews, schedule development, and material planning.
- Assisting the pre-construction team in the budgeting and scheduling process and in closing all major tendered project opportunities to ensure constructability is taken into account, and no scope gaps exist.
- Understand and oversee compliance with EPC contract requirements.
- Act as the main on-site representative, maintaining effective coordination and relationships with clients, business partners, subcontractors, project teams and all other stakeholders.
- Support the project team to complete weekly schedule updates are provided and incorporated in the project schedule, ensuring that completion dates and milestones are met.
- Ensure daily reporting, progress updates, and schedule input are provided to the project team.
- Resolve construction conflicts, technical issues, delays, and in-field issues, promptly.
- Direct electrical crews, manage employee relations and resolve employee issues.
- Provide mentoring, coaching, training and performance management to field personnel including forepersons and lead hands and coordinate the hiring of field manpower.
- Promote and enforce Barton Malow’s Safety and Quality culture across all substation work activities.
- Ensure all electrical installation practices follow regulatory requirements, utility standards, and industry best practices.
- Oversee installation, testing, and commissioning of electrical systems, including MV/HV equipment, substations, inverters, switchgear, and related infrastructure.
- Support development of Electrical Installation Work Packages and Inspection & Test Plans.
- Coordinate substation activities with civil, mechanical, and structural teams to ensure smooth workflow and adherence to project sequencing.
- Work with utilities, AHJs, and permitting authorities to support electrical permit issuance, inspections, and approvals.
- Manage day-to-day onsite substation operations from Notice to Proceed through commissioning and turnover.
- Lead daily PlanofDay discussions for substation work fronts and contribute to overall site coordination meetings.
- Support project closeout including punch lists, testing documentation, and turnover packages.
REQUIREMENTS & QUALIFICATIONS:
- Minimum 10 years of electrical construction experience with 5 years of high-voltage and substation experience.
- 5 years experience in a supervisory or superintendent role.
- Experience in energy, renewables, industrial, or utility electrical construction.
- Strong understanding of electrical codes, drawings, standards, and installation practices.
- Previous EPC project experience is an asset.
- Proven experience with substation or transmission line installation and commissioning is an required.
- Willing and able to work on remote project sites for the duration of construction.
- Demonstrated ability to lead crews and subcontractors effectively.
- Strong commitment to safe work practices and safety leadership.
- Proficient with Microsoft Office and digital field tools.
- Must be able to work on project site, and open to relocation for future projects.

- Base salary is $130,000 - $150,000, dependent on candidate job-related knowledge, skills, and experience.
