POSITION SUMMARY

 

The Data Catalog Manager is responsible for maintaining the integrity and accessibility of Barton Malow’s data catalog and business glossary to ensure data accuracy, integrity, and security. The Data Catalog Manager will also implement Barton Malow’s data governance roadmap. This role requires a blend of technical expertise, excellent communication skills, and a passion for data governance.

This role aims to educate Barton Malow team members on the significance of data governance, emphasizing its essential role in making well-informed business decisions and reducing the risks related to the management and storage of data.


KEY JOB RESPONSIBILITIES:

 

Data Catalog Management

  • Manage and maintain Barton Malow’s data catalog, ensuring all data assets are accurately cataloged and classified.
  • Develop and oversee Barton Malow’s business glossary, including defining and certifying business terms and metrics.
  • Onboard data stewards and data owners across the organization to ensure consistent data definitions and usage.
  • Lead initiatives to expand the coverage of the data catalog and business glossary across new data domains.
  • Monitor the usage and performance of the data catalog and business glossary, making recommendations for improvements.

Data Governance Roadmap Implementation

  • Implement the Data Governance roadmap developed during the 2023 Enterprise Knowledge engagement.
  • Design a governance framework with defined roles and responsibilities, such as for data governance leads, data stewards, data custodians, and data owners, ensuring a regular meeting cadence to sustain and evolve the strategic vision for governance.
  • Define processes and mechanisms for developing, documenting, sharing, applying, and updating data governance policies and practices via the framework.
  • Utilize an interoperable data catalog with priority platforms to centralize and aggregate siloed information, elevating relationships between disparate datasets to enhance connectivity and improve user experience.
  • Develop, document, and communicate standard policies and practices for requesting, managing, and tracking access requirements for applicable data sources
  • Utilize a data catalog to unify unstructured and structured data. Connect and leverage data of all formats with consistent metadata application.
  • Implement a taxonomy/ontology management system (TOMS) for indexing and leveraging unstructured content.
  • Design standardized business taxonomies that reflect user-centric language to improve faceted search with consistent tags.
  • Establish governance processes and mechanisms to apply tags to content across the organization consistently.
  • Identify Business Data Stewards to provide data’s intended use case.
  • Identify Technical Data Stewards to manage the technology and implementation of data requirements.
  • Develop a data stewardship program that includes the formation of roles, responsibilities, and procedures for accommodating business needs and requests for data.
  • Establish responsibilities and governance processes for managing and documenting the creation of and changes made to data sources, ensuring regular reviews for accuracy.
  • Develop, document, and communicate data lineage policies that outline responsibilities and best practices for maintaining data traceability.
  • Define, drive, and manage the data governance implementation roadmap, working with internal stakeholders and external vendors.


REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:

 

  • Bachelor’s degree in information management, computer science, or a master’s degree in library science or related field.
  • Minimum of 3 years of experience in data or information management, data governance, or a similar role.
  • Strong understanding of data catalog tools, data governance practices, and business glossary management.
  • Excellent communication and collaboration skills, with the ability to engage with technical and non-technical stakeholders.
  • Proven ability to manage multiple tasks and projects simultaneously with a keen attention to detail.
  • Experience working with the Atlan data governance platform.
  • Ability and desire to train and mentor other team members in data governance practices.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills to effectively collaborate with technical and non-technical team members.
  • Experience in managing data-related projects, demonstrating strong organizational and leadership skills.

 

WORK ENVIRONMENT/JOB CONDITIONS:  

  • Travel for project assignments may be required based on company needs.
