Position Summary

Barton Malow's Energy Thermal division is seeking an experienced and dynamic Mechanical Project Manager to join our team. This role is critical to our success in constructing and commissioning cutting-edge power generation facilities, typically comprised of Reciprocating Internal Combustion Engines (RICE), as well as Simple and Combined Cycle power plants, including co-located Renewables, such as Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS) and Solar.

The Mechanical Project Manager will be responsible for the overall oversight, management and direction of the mechanical Scopes of Work (SoW) on complex energy projects. This includes coordinating, planning, budgeting, scheduling, and oversight of mechanical-related activities from throughout the Project Lifecycle. This position is a frequent point of contact for the client, often leads interdisciplinary coordination efforts, and collaboratively endeavors to ensure that project objectives for safety, quality, budget, and schedule are met or exceeded. It is not uncommon for this position to also be tasked with overseeing HVAC and Pre-Engineered Metal Building scopes and has the potential to grow into the Project Lead for an entire project.

 

Key Responsibilities

  • Project Planning & Execution: Provide overall management direction for the mechanical scope of construction projects, establishing and implementing project objectives, including procedures, and performance standards within the boundaries of company policy, applicable Codes & Regulations and contract specifications.
  • Scope Management: Direct and coordinate all activities related to both low and high-energy piping systems, including fabrication, installation, welding, and testing via comprehensive Quality Control (QC) programs.
  • Procurement & Bidding: Lead the procurement process for the mechanical and associated equipment SoW, including the development of detailed bid packages and their associated work scopes and scope splits. Organize and conduct pre-bid meetings, perform thorough bid evaluations, bid leveling, lead and / or assist with post-bid reviews and Owner Recommendation Packages as required.
  • Financial Controls: Create and manage project budgets, with a focus on financial spending tracking and forecasting. Implement and maintain earned value management (EVM) systems to monitor project health. Review, analyze, and process project and SoW change orders, detailing their impact on the project to both Owners / Clients and internally to the Organization.
  • Client & Stakeholder Relations: Serve as a key point of contact for direct engagement with the Owner/Client. Actively manage relationships and maintain effective and timely communication with architects, engineers, consultants, superintendents, subcontractors and Owners / Clients.
  • Interdisciplinary Coordination: Facilitate frequent and effective coordination with all other major disciplines (Architectural, Civil, Concrete, Structural, Electrical, and I&C) to ensure effective project integration.
  • Support & Leadership: Provide support, and guidance to the wider project team, including superintendents and engineers, to ensure progress is within expected guidelines and completed on time and within budget. May assume a lead role in dispute resolution activities and is tasked with the oversight, supervision, and mentoring of assigned Direct Reports such as Project Managers and Project Engineers.

 

Qualifications and Skills

  • Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering is preferred, with strong consideration for comparable education and experience in Construction Management, Chemical Engineering, Civil Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or a related field.
  • A minimum of 5 years of experience as a Project Manager in the construction of power generation facilities or similar heavy industrial projects is highly preferred.
  • Extensive technical knowledge of high and low-energy piping systems, industrial welding procedures, applicable Codes & Regulations and associated Quality Assurance / Quality Control (QAQC) requirements.
  • Proven ability in developing comprehensive bid packages, performing detailed bid analysis, and managing subcontracts.
  • Strong financial acumen with experience in cost forecasting, earned value management, and managing the change order process.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite, Bluebeam, and SAP is required.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, comfortable with direct client engagement and leading multidisciplinary team environments.
  • Ability to read, understand, and enforce owner contract agreements, employer policies & procedures, project specifications and similar.
  • Travel for project assignments will likely be required based on Company needs and active projects.
