Traveling Project Engineer (Automotive)

Kentucky, Ohio, Indiana, Tennessee

Open to travel

Position Summary

Barton Malow is hiring a Traveling Project Engineer to join our automotive team on manufacturing projects across Kentucky, Ohio, Indiana, and Tennessee. This is an entry-level, field-based role: you will provide technical support to the project team, manage project documentation, and help drive day-to-day execution alongside our superintendents and field crews.

Barton Malow has built for the automotive industry for a century. That relationship with the nation's automakers shows up in the precision, speed, and cleanroom expertise these projects demand, and it puts our teams on some of the largest manufacturing investments in the country. This role puts you on work at that scale.

Because our automotive clients build across the region, this position travels. You will be considered for assignment at active project sites in Kentucky, Ohio, Indiana, and Tennessee, and you should be open to travel and to moving between sites as projects start and complete.

A note on the location you will see when you apply: Barton Malow is headquartered in Southfield, Michigan, so our job application system lists that as the posting location. This is not a Southfield-based role. It is a traveling position, and the assignment will be at one of our active automotive project sites in Kentucky, Ohio, Indiana, or Tennessee.

Key Job Responsibilities

Field Engineering

  • Walk the project site to capture safety observations and progress photos, and to identify issues before they affect the work.
  • Assist the superintendent with daily execution of the work in the field.
  • Work directly with field crews and functional managers to learn construction sequencing, material placement, and field workflows.
  • Support QA/QC activities, quantity take-offs, and site logistics planning using our digital platforms.

Document Control + Project Support

  • Prepare, track, and distribute RFIs, submittals, and project correspondence.
  • Record daily quantities and facilitate weekly productivity reviews.
  • Maintain tracking logs for purchased materials and rented equipment.
  • Attend project meetings, and record minutes and action items.
  • Maintain drawings, specifications, and project closeout documentation.
  • Facilitate installation work packages and coordinate execution plans with field teams.

Safety + Compliance

  • Uphold Barton Malow corporate safety policies and site-specific safety requirements.
  • Proactively identify and help mitigate safety risks in the field.

What You Bring

  • Bachelor's degree in construction management, civil engineering, or a related field.
  • One to three years of relevant construction experience.
  • Willingness to travel and relocate between project sites in Kentucky, Ohio, Indiana, and Tennessee.
  • Ability to interpret drawings, specifications, and technical documents.
  • Strong communication, organizational, and client service skills.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite and construction software platforms.
  • A proactive attitude and a real commitment to safety and quality.

Why Barton Malow

Barton Malow has been in business since 1924 — one of fewer than half a percent of companies to reach a century. We are privately held, roughly $5 billion in annual revenue, 3,000+ team members across North America, and consistently ranked among the ENR Top 40 contractors. Our safety performance runs at roughly half the industry EMR benchmark.

For a project engineer early in a career, that combination matters: you learn the work from the people doing it, on projects where the stakes and the standards are high.
