POSITION SUMMARY

Barton Malow Company is seeking an experienced Estimator with a focus on mission-critical projects, specifically in the data center sector, to join our growing team. This position is flexible, offering the option to be based in our Southfield, MI office or work remotely, depending on the candidate’s preference.  This role offers an exciting opportunity for an individual with prior data center estimating experience to contribute to our Work Acquisition team, specializing in the estimation of complex, high-stakes projects. The ideal candidate will have a proven background in estimating data center projects, bringing expertise in managing estimates for critical infrastructure. This position is critical to our continued growth in the mission critical sector, and you will play a key role in ensuring accurate, cost-effective estimates for data center construction and related mission-critical work.


KEY JOB RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Lead the preparation of estimates for data center and mission-critical projects, including electrical, mechanical, structural, and IT infrastructure components.
  • Develop detailed, accurate estimates for various contract types including lump sum, design-build, and construction management models.
  • Solicit bids, communicate with subcontractors and suppliers, and evaluate pricing for critical data center systems.
  • Perform detailed quantity takeoffs and cost analysis, ensuring precise and accurate bid submissions.
  • Write clear, comprehensive scopes of work for data center projects, ensuring clarity for procurement and project execution.
  • Work closely with project management and preconstruction teams, as well as subcontractors, to ensure all project requirements and timelines are met.
  • Utilize experience to propose value engineering solutions that balance cost savings with quality, maintaining project integrity.
  • Provide guidance and mentorship to junior estimators, sharing best practices and ensuring professional development in the estimating field.
  • Work throughout the preconstruction phase, providing insights that contribute to scheduling, procurement, and overall project planning.


REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:

  • Bachelor’s degree in construction management, engineering, or a related field, or equivalent professional experience.
  • Minimum of 5 years of estimating experience, specifically in the data center or mission critical sector.
  • Demonstrated experience estimating data center construction, including knowledge of the specialized systems and technologies involved.
  • Ability to learn how to utilize estimating software such as Bluebeam, Excel, and WinEst.
  • Prior experience with Amazon Web Services, Google, Microsoft, QTS, etc. is preferred.
  • Strong understanding of construction trades, project schedules, and the potential risks associated with mission-critical projects.
  • Strong ability to lead teams, communicate effectively with clients, subcontractors, and internal teams, and provide mentorship to less experienced estimators.
  • Ability to manage complex, high stakes estimates with precision, ensuring cost-effective and accurate proposals.
