POSITION SUMMARY

Barton Malow is currently seeking an experienced Mechanical Estimator to join our Preconstruction Department, based in Southfield, Michigan.

We are seeking a highly skilled mechanical estimator with 10+ years of experience in piping systems, energy infrastructure, and industrial facility construction. The ideal candidate will have a strong background in power generation, central utility plants, or large-scale industrial mechanical systems.

This individual will gain both office and jobsite experience and will be responsible for performing detailed design reviews, quantity takeoffs, system sizing, and cost estimating for plumbing system piping, HVAC ductwork and power process piping, air distribution systems, heating and cooling generation equipment, temperature control systems, and fire protection systems for large industrial, commercial, and institutional construction projects.


KEY JOB RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Prepare detailed quantity takeoffs and cost estimates for mechanical systems associated with thermal power plants (Simple cycle gas turbine, combined cycle gas turbine and Reciprocating engine power plants, etc.).
  • Perform estimates at different levels including 30%/conceptual design, 60%/design development, and 90+%/construction documents.
  • Develop labor productivity rates, equipment costs, and material pricing based on market conditions.
  • Prepare estimate clarifications, assumptions, and exclusions.
  • Provide technical support for resolution and tracking project issues.
  • Identify scope gaps, risks, and value engineering opportunities during the bidding phase.
  • Solicit, review, and level subcontractor and vendor quotations.
  • Participate in pre-bid meetings, site visits, and technical review sessions.
  • Support the preconstruction team in the bidding process for the different procurement methods including general contracts, design-build, EPC (Engineering Procurement, and Construction) and construction management.
  • Provide general support to Barton Malow’s field operations by reviewing field change orders and assisting in answering contractors’ request for information.
  • Maintain and update estimating databases and historical cost.


REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES

  • Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering, Construction Management, or  related field (or equivalent industry experience).
  • Individuals without an engineering degree are also encouraged to apply for this position if through their experience and training can work on design/build projects and be able to generate estimates at conceptual level.
  • Prior working knowledge and proficiency in Excel, Winest, MCAA WebLEM, BlueBeam and Autobid is a plus.
  • Proficiency in estimating software and takeoff tools.  Prior knowledge of Microsoft programs is essential, “on screen” take off and Revit modeling is a plus.
  • 7+ years of mechanical estimating experience in thermal power generation or heavy industrial projects.
  • Strong knowledge of boilers, steam turbines, cooling systems, fuel handling systems, high-energy piping, and balance-of-plant equipment.
  • Ability to read and interpret P&IDs, isometrics, general arrangement drawings, and technical specifications.
  • Knowledge of cost control and budget tracking processes.
  • Strong analytical, organizational, and communication skills.
  • Experience with EPC or large-scale industrial construction projects preferred.
  • Familiarity with ASME codes, high-pressure piping systems, and power plant standards.
  • Experience with self-perform and subcontractor bid environments is a plus.
  • Understanding of project scheduling and construction sequencing.
